DataSonics, Inc., a designer and manufacturer of underwater acoustic systems, has been acquired by Benthos, Inc. (Nasdaq:BTHS). Based in Cataumet, Massachusetts, DataSonics is a specialist in underwater acoustic instruments, including side-scan sonar systems that enable researchers to determine what is beneath the ocean bottom and acoustic telemetry equipment that transmits communications underwater.

Benthos, located in North Falmouth, Massachusetts, manufactures equipment for undersea exploration and research, including acoustic devices that help search the ocean bottom for oil and gas reserves and remotely operated vehicles that carry video cameras into the ocean depths. Its TapTone division makes systems for testing consumer packages made of glass, metal or plastic.
